I have run into this problem before.This happened on a packaged unit...namely a hewlet packard model 8130.Do I remember what the hell we did to fix it?...no...sorrry...but i am thinking again...and i do remember changing parts in the machine to fix it.I wonder if you still have your old ram with you steve...and maybe just put that in to see if your new stuff may be damaged.Usually when the system restore files are damaged it comes up with the system restore error but after we changed a few parts...cards...ram...network card and such.and reformatted...it worked again...go figure...I am worried though that you may have gotten a boot sector virus...this has happened also on about 3 computers i fixed...how to fix it?...well change the fat32 to NTSF or visa versa at least once...thereby wiping out the boot sector and rewriting it...the boot sector virus may not be picked up by your antivirus...as ours didn't pick it up either...using nortons newest...the boot sector virus will cause all sorts of grief in system operations...I just hope this is not your problem...but rewriting the boot sector will get rid of it for sure...ok these are some of the ideas i have come up with from experience..without the machine here i cannot eliminate the problems through a sequence...changing the boot sector is the last resort...hopefully you have had better luck since your last post...hopefully it is just a driver problem although the system restore not working sounds more like a boot virus working its magic.

could having fast writes enabled in bios cause these problems? i've heard that it can cause problems. i went into my bios and noticed that it was enabled, so i disabled it, and am in the process of downloading the omega driver again < had deleted all of it, lol >

well yes fast writes enabled causes problems also but if i remember correctly...you didn't change anything in the bios before you had this problem right?you said it happened after you installed java...although...you could have also installed a boot sector virus without knowing it either from a program like that that could have been piggybacking it...hmmm...not sure though...just try it with fast writes disabled and hopefully something good will happen..Like...it'll work..LOL..
but i have this sinking feeling it is more than just a fast write problem.

i was in marks server for quite a while this afternoon, so lets hope it's fixed !!! we did a few short races, and a lot of practice, so it's looking good so far !!!
