well, i went back to DX 9b also, and that was NOT the problem, i just opened a room, and had done a few laps, and my PC completely froze , i had to hit the reset button, could NOT get out of the game at all, so it's back to the drawing board, lol. I didn't reformat, i found a program to uninstall DX9, and go back to DX 8.1, then reinstalled (b, and still all f'd up :(

aye yiee yiee,
so direct x was not the problem eh.hmmm...You said you are not overclocking at all and everything is at stock right??.You think maybe first you should go back to the cat 4.6's for a shot? Also I am wondering do you get any static from your sound at all???any type of glitch when the sound comes on?.I am asking this because I have had problems with memory getting damaged from overclocking before.Try running a memory test on your sticks of memory...i belive you have done that before although I am not sure. You can get ram tests almost anywhere. Also try one more thing...try running the machine with no sound..maybe even just pull the sound card and try a game to see...although it would suck playing but i've had sound cards cause this kind of problem also...hmmm lets see what else i can remember...right ..I'm old and i can't remember things right away..LOL...
first try those things and I will think on other problems for now ok?

one more thing eh steve...
make sure your ati fan is working well...not dragging...I don't think it is a heat problem but you may be hearing your heat sink fan mostly and won't detect if your vid card fan is slowing down...

hm, well, i have the Arctic cooling VGA silencer installed on the card, dumped the stock fan, and i know it's working, it vents the hot air out the back from a pci slot, and i have the Nvidia Soundstorm, no sound card
Also, this first happened while i was using the Omega version of the cat 4.6's, and it ran flawlessly for several months on those, i tried the Omega version of the Beta 8.07's also, and they did perform better, bur STILL had the game crashes, and system freezes, now i'm using the ATI Cat 4.9's

I'm wondering if doing Repair from the XP Pro cd might help? i've ran 3 different spy ware programs, so that isn't the problem, did two full system virus scans, and both came up negative also

I'm still thinking on it...if you have no viruses and no spyware then at least we can narrow it down a bit.I was thinking of getting you to increase the page file size but then the computer does it by itself so that can'r be the problem also.It actually sounds like a driver problem.origina;;y i thought maybe from changing drivers something might have been left behind like nvidia is so famous for..but again you said you reformatted so that problem is eliminated also..I also don't think overclocking did any damage as ashlee's machine has been overclocked ever since i built it.
Since the problem just basically started that also eliminates improper grounding of the mother board...boy steve...you sure know how to make a challenge eh?...still working on it...oh and by the way looks like i will be giving up this drywalling(sheetrock in u.s.a.) to work in an electronics store by the end of febuary...this might save the old body from any more injuries..LOL...apparently i will be selling pianos vid cameras and car stereos since they are all my forte..I have known the owner for years...he has 25 years guitar experience and i have 18 years piano..i think we will sell alot and i will be working in an alwaysWARM environment...hehehe...I'll get back to you as i rack my brain on the crash to desktop problem further at work today...

nope, i haven't installed it, i do have it on cd though, one thing i did notice, i ran dxdiag, and i see an error, it says "the file qasf.dll is an old version, which could cause problems" i've went back to dx 8.1 and reinstalled dx 9b, and it still gives the same error, any idea what this file is?

It's supposed to be a codec (Windows Media Player) for ASF files. Maybe try to up-/down- grade your Media Player?

hey steve,
qasf.dll is a speech decoder and sometimes does not get updated with your direct x...try this program firts and then reinstall direct x again to see if it is fixed or not http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/14/ ... html....or you can try this one as well http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2935.html.....
maybe this is your problem..I have had problems with directx before as well even as far back as direct x 7.o

From the message, the problem is video driver-related. Almost every times I have seen something like this, it was due either to the drivers themselves or temperature/overclock of the video card. Of course, you could be unlucky and you card could have broken, but I would first try to go back to your last working configuration (i.e. different drivers).

If you want to test qasf.dll, there is an ASF file HERE, although it could disappear during the day as it's supposed to be replaced by another file later today. If you get 404 not found error, just DON'T PANIC and cut the filename part of the above URL, then choose the WMP 5.1 button. Enjoy!

also let me tell you steve...you don't want to send your video card away...believe me you will be waiting 2 months before you get it back.I am banking on the driver problem here.Maybe we're barking up the wrong tree with the asf file error altogether.try updating your onboard sound driver also...if you haven't done that already...

just a question, i have 2 versions of Java installed, and i installed the 2nd one just about the same time this started happening, could that be the problem? the reason i have 2 versions installed is ,one program i use that needs java, would not work with the newest version

I've got at least 5 different versions of (Sun's) Java installed on my PC at work and I have no problems.

I won't say anything about Microsoft's Java VM though...

suns, XP doesn't have java as far as i know, and for sure it wasn't included with SP1, i uninstalled one version, so we'll see if thats what the problem was, another question, i tried doing a system restore, from several different dates, and when i rebooted it gave me a message " could not perform system restore" is there a process that HAS to be running in order for system restore to work?
