LOL, I'm probably no real modder to you!

I just reverse-engineered what Dan did for the NAR 2003 mod and tried to redo it for the 2004 Season. All I did was to copy the RH2003 folder and tweak a few text files, although I now have developped a pretty good understanding of how the whole system works which makes me unafraid to tackle the dedicated server thing.

With what I know now, I could probably start doing a "real" mod (tracks/cars) but I'd still need to learn a few little things in the process. But since I'm NOT an artist, I'm more interested in the purely technical aspect of modding.

As one of my current projects (too many for the little time I have), I have started building a new telemetry application. There are a few tidbits of info not shown in the current app (like water & oil temps) which might be useful to someone trying to tweak his radiator settings without risking an engine blowing. My ultimate goal is to be able to read replay files and "join" the telemetry app and the replay viewer. Ideally, it could either make a video from a telemetry file or generate telemetry data from a replay file (much more interesting since replay files are abundant on the Net). I think that could be a great learning tool for beginners and not-so-beginners. If anyone has any knowledge about the VCR (F1C replay) file format, PLEASE contact me! I already can extract the "interesting" data from telemetry files but replay files are much harder to reverse-engineer since they're all-binary.

Now, to answer your question, for the NAR 2004 mod, UltraEditand NSIS are my friends. There's no rocket science in this. It could all be done using only Notepad and batch files but I guess I'm getting "soft" as I grow older...

Bilbo,
Where can I go to learn about the track/car mods you're talking about? Is there a place I can read about how to modify the files or do I pretty much just have to hack away at it? Thanks.

Wel how you can change the layout i dont know, but i do know how you can change textures in the game.

You need a .MAS grabber program for it at least. You can get the bitmaps out of that file and place them back after you changed it.

I find that the forums at racesimcentral are a good place to start, lots of technical info by/for modders, including tutorials.

There are also tidbits of useful informations in a lot of other F1C forums but these you have to find by yourself and they're often "lost" in the "noise" of the forums.

Since there is no real centralized places where you can get all the information you (probably) want, you may still have to "hack" a bit by yourself...

Hope this helps...
