Everyone (servers and clients) should set their connection type to whetever best describes their connection.
Additionally, if you are a server or if you want to tune your client settings for optimum performance then you should also set the "Throttle Upstream Override" value to something just below what your connection can handle. The unit for "Throttle Upstream Override" is kilobits per second.
In my case I know my connection can handle around 235 kilobyte/s (I get this number from my FTP server and from Direct Connect, you can also measure your bandwidth using one of many free services on the Internet - just use Google to find one). 235kbyte/s translates into roughly 1900kbit/s. I have set my "Throttle Upstream Override" to 1700 to make sure I never fully saturate the upstream bandwidth. The reason for this is to, hopefully, avoid some packet loss that might happen on a fully saturated link.
If you can upload 109 kbyte/s (which is 872 kbit/s) then you should set "Throttle Upstream Override" to around 800 to be on the safe side. If you can only upload 109 kbit/s (less than a dual-channel ISDN connection) then you will have a hard time hosting for more than maybe two or three cars. You should set "Throttle Upstream Override" to around 100 in that case.
Hopfully you can upload with 109 kbyte/s in which case you should have no problem hosting lag-free races with at least 10 cars, maybe 15.

upload speed
ok Dan, here is what broadband reports showed for my dsl speed, let me know what setting i should use for "throttle over ride " in the .plr file
) Your download speed : 317717 bps, or 317 kbps.
A 38.7 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 109439 bps, or 109 kbps.

A 38.7 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 109439 bps, or 109 kbps.

Re: upload speed
That barely qualifies as broadband, unfortunately. Your upload speed is lower than dual channel ISDN.Steve wrote:ok Dan, here is what broadband reports showed for my dsl speed, let me know what setting i should use for "throttle over ride " in the .plr file) Your download speed : 317717 bps, or 317 kbps.

I would use a value of 100 for "Throttle Upstream Override" if I were you!

That's quite poor for broadband, if you're paying more than £20 a month I'd expect at least 400k DL and 200kUL. And most windows OS aren't configured for ADSL/Cable connections http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php has registry tweaks and at the top a TCPoptimizer. I've used both and have seen significant improvements:)

oki i just tested my dl and ul
download 1389 kbit/s
upload is 113k
and this is standing in my plr file what should i change
Throttle Upstream Override="-1" // kbits per second (i.e. a 256 kbps connection = 256. If set to a positive value, will override the default upstream data rate associated with the selected connection type
download 1389 kbit/s
upload is 113k

Throttle Upstream Override="-1" // kbits per second (i.e. a 256 kbps connection = 256. If set to a positive value, will override the default upstream data rate associated with the selected connection type

Change to:
Throttle Upstream Override="110"
And use DSL/Cbale connection type.

216 kbit/s upstream is not terribly fast, so you will be limited to hosting for 5 cars or less I think. You should use a Throttle Upstream Value of 205, and probably a datarate of 12 to get the best performance.magnussen wrote:hi dan, and others i just run the tjek on my pc and i get
216.77 kbit/s in upload
2.52 mbit/s in download
i gues thats ok to run a server or is it![]()
DAN THE MAN, can u tell me what to set in the game plz
thx........ magnussen
PS! I have not looked into the results document you posted, so I don't know where the server is located that you tested against. If it is in the US then please retest against a well-connected European server instead.

330 sounds about right. That should be enough for 6-8 people at ISDN rate. Make absolutely sure you set connection type to ISDN (or 56K) though! If you set it to Cable/DSL you will only be able to host 3-4 people.dutch power wrote:My messurement is now 353 Kbit/sec upstream.
How many people can i host if im the server.
And the trottle upstream should be around 330/340 or so if im correct then, though.
