Happy New Year! (and forum downtime info)

Post by DanTheMan »

The forum downtime was due to stupidity. I made a full backup of the database and files, and forgot to restart mysql/apache once the backup was done. Duh! :)

Happy New Year to you all!

I'm online several times a week using rFactor. Until recently I almost exclusively drove the F3 mod, but I've been doing some PCC racing the last week also. Good fun!

I tried the F1 mod, but it keeps changing and I just don't have enough patience to try to keep up with patches and stuff like that. Besides, the F3s and Porches provide a LOT of fun and feel better suited for online play. Lower speed and less powerful brakes makes for fewer race-ending accidents.

The forum will be up and down a bit for the next day or so. There's nothing wrong with hardware or software, I'm just running some upgrades on the server to bring all installed applications up to their latest versions.

The server sits behind a pretty restrictive firewall so it's not quite as vulnerable as a server sitting directly in the Internet, but it doesn't hurt to keep stuff up-to-date. :!:

After noticing that quoting stopped working after the update of the forum software I took a close look at the code. Turns out that updating the forum software using the official patch-files has failed to properly modify all files, leaving us with a somewhat broken install. Not sure how this happened, but I'll report it back to the developers of phpBB.

Fortunately I put the forum software under version control (Subversion) last year to help deal with updates, and it helped me a lot while tracking this problem down.

The final solution was to download the latest full release of phpBB (2.0.19), apply the latest attachment mod (2.4.1) and then using Subversion to manually inspect the changes compared to what we were actually using. Some of the changes missing were quite substantial!

I had made a few custom changes to the old code that I've tried to carry over to the new install. This mostly has to do with making the forum more search-engine-friendly (allowing the Google and MSN spiders to index the public forums better). I think I found and fixed all of these changes, but given the large diff between the old and new code it's hard to be 100% certain.

Anyway, what you are using now is a fresh codebase consisting of phpBB v2.0.19 + attachment mod v2.4.1 + a few local changes. The only real difference is the update of the attachment mod from 2.3.14 to 2.4.1, plus of course the update to the REAL phpBB 2.0.19 (since the old install was somewhat broken).

Please let me know if you find any problems!

Oh, yeah, you might need to re-login after the update. One of the missing changes dealt with how logins are handled.

Yo ..Happy New Yera everyone...and hello to Erick who we all miss racing with.Hope you are doing ok m8.Been along time since we heard from you.You Dan,sounds like you are still a busybody and thanks for keeping this forum rockin and rollin.I have been racing the porsches as well and have a blast. The slower speeds makes for cleaner racing by far and with so many damn tracks converted over it never gets boring..LOL>..thank god for that.
Will hopefully see some of you guys online during this break. Now if I could just get a little more time offa work...
