2006 web site

Post by Flow »

Hi all, for 2006, the web site will be all remodled. The interface of some part will be in html with some flash insertion, instead of a completely flash site.

Reason:
The Flash site is fun and animated, even if i didnt had time to completly finish this actual one. But, since we will run on "probably" another mod, and divison will maybe not necessary, anyway, winter will tell us, i cant spend time to complete completely this 2005 site.

Bilbo and me will try to meet in future to make a merge of "Programer addicted" and "designer addcted" to his work, to make a nice web site, but most of all, a site that can be updated in few minutes, in the next hours of eatch race... So days of delay will be over.

Bilbo competence of programming will do a sofware user friendly to update race stats, drivers list, and so... ( its already in use, but need some add on, and its not compatible with actual flah site).

So if any have any suggestion or commet to make our "web family room" more interesting, let us know.

All comment are welcome, but one thing : Comment on general information of graphic, i will take care about it.

BUT all comment on rules, regulation or administration can also be sent, but is on Cart restriction. He will consider all comment. HE will take it or not or put it on vote or whatever. This must be clear...

Thanks you for your comprehension and support.

Good to hear Flow.

Will the site address be the same or will that also change?

The site's address(es) should stay the same no matter what happens as it's just a redirection service to the actual site whose address is actually unimportant and hard to remember (and could change at any moment anyways).

Why don't someone with DNS know-how and a PayPal account offer to buy a real domain?

If we buy noaidsracing.com at http://www.godaddy.com it's only US $8.95 for a year, $17.90 for two years and $36.25 for 5 years. There are several good & free DNS providers (for example http://www.everydns.net/), so no need to run your own DNS server.

I'm sure there are more than a few guys here with PayPal that can help pay for the domain. I'm on a shoestring budget myself at the moment, but I'd gladly help set it up as long as a few people chip in through PayPal.

k, yes ame here i can have a line including the .ca ro .com for 6.99 including hosting on big server) a moth and mail and ... But if it was my league, i woud pay for it, and try to put more time. now since its a non lucrative and even all on sapre time from all, and the league is not owned from anybody, whos gonna pay for it.

For this year it went not bad up to now. But yes if we want to survive long and not loose control of it, and since Cart is maybe taking is reverency, we coud prepare 2006 management of the league. May we shoud have a kind of bord of director compose of exemple 3 admin somehow select., and the andmin cover all the league minor decision of race penality, new driver, and big decision of rules regulation and mod, is choose from them but need all member aproval.... The admin shoud find small amount from sponsoring, to pay the web site, even do weird stuff as t-shirt, cap or so to make some found to the league, all amount published on the site to proove none makes profit with it, only to run a free membership for driver.... bla, bla, bla

Anyway we have 2 option that can be aplied to from 2006

1- keep full free conventional and 1 boss like this year
2- select admin voted by member, managing from web site to rules, going by the mod and ... base on a democratic way, and transparency of admin.

Its maybe not a discussion to bring up now, but its things that is going tru my mind these days and some other driver also as i already have friendly discussion with Bilbo, he have nice idea also to improve things, or at least improve some procedure on hosting, and other stuff... This is only on purpose to make shure we always improve things in good way for the league... I know that all can have good idea on this.

Or just let the leagu run on its own

Why would someone have to pay when it can be free? Sure, we could have our own domain, even have professional hosting for relatively cheap. But why would we?

Also, as soon as we start paying, even if not much, comes responsibilty. Then, if the "owner" quits, comes the trouble of transferring responsibility. In the event of the "owner" becoming unreachable for whatever reason, the league/site becomes in trouble.

Buying a domain with the current hosting is worthless as we would still use a redirection service to tag the port number to the URL (my ISP blocks port 80 outbound). Good free hosting with free services like PHP and MySQL and no hassles is not that easy to find.

If the speed of the current site is bothering anyone, please bear in mind that we already have projects to alleviate this for next season (the flash part will be smaller, if we keep it). We could also pay for "real" hosting, but that would greatly decrease my interest in the project.

My point is that it's not so much the money, it's more for the trouble... Anyways, I believe the website should not be our main worry at the moment, we have more important things to decide, like what game and/or mod will we be using next season, will the league be run as it is now or do we decide to change the decision process, 2 wheels or 4 wheels on track at all times, things like that. That's my 2ml of fuel...

If web hosting is an issue I can arrange for an account on the server that runs this forum.

FreeBSD 6 + Apache 2 + PHP 4 + MySQL 4.1 + phpMyAdmin + Subversion (+anything else that is needed) on a dual P3/500 box with enough disk for normal usage. PHP 5 would be nice, but phpBB still has some issues with it afaik.

It runs off of a residential 10Mbit full duplex line, so it's not professional grade stuff. But the price is pretty unbeatable (free)! :D

10Mbit full duplex? Then why are you not running a race server on this line???

There are no real problems with the current hosting except for the speed (800kbit up), which becomes more critical when there is a mod release...

Thanks for the offer, I'll keep that in mind!

It's not my line (I don't live there), but I help the guy run his network so I get to use it for some web hosting.

If I want to host it would be much better to do it where I live. I've got 100Mbit full duplex with excellent routing here.

Sorry, I cannot do that. A lack of time, hardware and interest is to blame.

Flow ...about your original question (2006 website)

I'd suggest a clear table for an overview of the season running, actually it's not easy to see who is active racer or not, who is beating who and so on.

Here some examples :
http://www.formula-simracing.org/2005/d ... dstandings
http://www.sim-challenge.com/sys/standings.asp

This way it seems to be more clear to visitors.

Also I dunno if it's already been discussed but it's impossible to navigate with firefox...As it's getting more and more popular, I'd say this could be on the wishlist

Anyway 2005 website looks good Great job done :D

Thanks its already discuss between me and Bilbo, that kind of grid for driver point and standing, thanks.

For Firefox, il take a look back at Macromedia, if they found a solution to solve the problem, but firefox is the only browser who cant manage correctly Flash animated website, but since they know the problem, must be a solution somewhere, il check for it.

Thans for suggestion, cya
