Time zones - a short primer

Post by DanTheMan »

Here's a short primer on time zones just in case someone here is having a difficult time understanding them and how to figure out what 10pm CET is in local time. :-)

I wrote this for the other league I'm participating in (http://f1racing.servegame.com). Hopefully it can be of use to someone in NAR also.

Here's a short primer for the timezone challenged among you:

GMT - Greenwich Mean Time. This has an offset of zero (0) hours and is used by England and Portugal. The name GMT comes from the small village of Greenwich, located a short boatride down the Thames from London. If you go there you can see the old observatory and "see" the Geenwich meridian. You can also grab some good Fish'n'Chips in one of the pubs on the way from the boats to the observatory. :-) More info here: http://greenwichmeantime.com/

CET - Central European Time. Offset +1 hour. Used by most countries in central Europe except Finland.

EST - Eastern Standard Time. Offset -5 hours. Used by the east coast of the USA.

PST - Pacific Standard Time. Offset -8 hours. Used by the west coast of the USA.

Since most members are located either in the CET time zone or in one of the four time zones used in the US, using GMT is not very useful as a reference since almost everyone will have to convert the time. Therefore it is much better to express the time in both CET and EST. Most americans seem to know how to handle the four domestic time zones (EST, CST, MST, PST), but they are utterly clueless when it comes to handling other timezones. ;-)

The difference between EST and CET is 6 hours. This means 3pm (15.00) EST is the same as 9pm (21.00) CET. Another example: 8pm (20.00) EST = 2am (02.00) CET.

Even more info here: http://greenwichmeantime.com/info/timezone.htm

Is everyone clear on this now?
