It's the usual Microsoft after-installation cleanup: remove/disable whatever is running and you don't need...
I've gone to SP2 since a few months and I have had absolutely no problems. IE in SP2 is much better than in plain-XP or SP1.

I tried to install SP2 about 6 months ago and it screwed up everything. Particularly the sound files for F1C. I gave up and did a restore to a point just before my install.
However, since that time I updated my video, sound and chip set direvers; did a reinstall of SP 2 and now all seems fine.
My best advice - CREATE A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT JUST BEFORE YOU INSTALL!------- Next, make sure all of your drviers are up to date before doing the install.

I haven't installed sp2 yet .Instead I just installed the "net farmework 1.1"from microsoft to keep up to date.Since most of the drivers are now being made for sp2.I will eventually have to install it anyway.

If you're still using IE, it's definitely a must to upgrade to SP2. I have personal experience that it IS actually safer, which is what finally convinced me to upgrade. I got on a site that "buffer overflowed" my IE (made it crash) and tried to installed some backdoor on my system despite my pretty restrictive security settings. I was fortunate enough to "catch it in the act" so I could easily clean things up. I then installed SP2 and visited the same site (maybe 2 hours after the incident) and nothing malicious could get through. That's not saying there's no more security problems in SP2, but many of the previous flaws are definitely fixed.
