getting close to a new system!!!

Post by brad »

thought id share this. getting close to having a modern system again. Ive been starting to wonder if my system is contributing to my connection problems, who knows, but it will be nice to be kinda fast again.

current setup:
old asus nforce 2 board
amd mobile atlhon xp 2000mhz -overclocked to 2.4
512mb ddr 2700 or some godawfully slow shit

(you love this one) nvidia geforce 4 ti 4600 128mb--and its failing
(it does wierd color shifts in the intro screens, cant watch more than 5 mins of monaco replay with low settings without it locking up-that just started at spain) game play is ok with low settings, no lock ups yet but its
coming

1-30gb ide100 drive and 1-15gb even older ide66-im still amazed the drives are alive, but i think the main one is starting to show signs of death

if any remember, i did have a more modern gigabyte sli board for amd 939 and was running a 64bit 2200mhz chip, geforce 6600gt 256mb pci-e,
memory and hard drives were the same. but i jacked up the cpu on removal when installing a new fan, when it was really my power supply that was failing. long story short(too late) for the money, i decided to go intel duel-core. heres my new setup that should be up and running in a month

Asus P5ND2-SLI (nforce 4 chipset for intel lga-775) supports all the core2 and i believe quad core cpus, 1066/800/667 FSB supports ddr2 800mhz memory. good overclocking platform)
corsair xms2pro 1gb 667mhz (2 512 sticks) again very overclockable
then my currently not it use geforce 6600gt sli card(can get another one pretty cheap now and run in sli)

watching a Asus silent square cpu cooler, maybe not as good as the zalman cnp9700 or water cooling, but works pretty well and looks nice

newegg has a deal on re-certified western digital caveir 250gb sata 3.0b with a 16mb cashe for $56, with many great reviews, and manufacturer warrenty. would love to get 3 and go raid 5, but for now im just going to order one.

going to go with windows xp media center edition 2005 v2 new egg has it fairly cheap, ive also found it on ebay bundled with the microsoft media center wireless keyboard, remote, and the receiver, for $179.

eventually ill get a new case, media center style, but for now ill stick with the tower. ill get some pics when its up and running.

Hi Guys,

I didn't want to start a new thread so I will post it here.

I just bought the nVidia 8600 GTS card my problem is that when in game (off line) I get 200 FPS but when I joined the server I was only getting between 90 and 130 FPS.

Would anyone know as to why this happens?
Does the PING have anything to do with it?

Thanks

Steve B

Working hard

Post by Ruben Miranda »

Hello
Not a Expert but yes ping/Connection has something to do with it.

When online it takes a little longer to get the info to display and your comp Cpu hard drive V-Card Memory all work a little harder.

It might not be the V-card it could be one of the top 4 Clogging/Slowing down your comp.

It could also be a simple thing as the driver installed incorrectly.
Did you use a driver remove tool (Can not remember what it is called) or a reg cleaner.

Hitman 8)
I might not be fast, But I am ahead of you.

Shame on you Steve-OOOOOOOOOO that's what you get for buying Nvidia, hehe, I don't notice a difference between online or offline, i probably get a little better online because we never have a full grid of 22.
I may be slow, but at least I'm consistantly slow !

Thank you very much for the help guys.

I just uninstalled the old drivers Hitman then installed the new ones.
Should I have done something else HITMAN??

LOL Bilbo, I guess you have a point but I am not complaining, I was just wondering if I was the only one having this problem. I was getting about 50 to 60 FPS with my old card.

STEVE-OOOO I have been thinking about that exact thing today...:)

Hey Steve, you went from ATI to Nvidia, correct? if so search for a little program called "Driver cleaner" uninstall your drivers, reboot, DO NOT let your system reinstall the drivers, then reboot again in safe mode, and run driver cleaner, and get rid of all traces of ATI drivers, then, reboot, and install your new Nvidia drivers, that may help you. Sometimes remnants of old drivers can mess with a new vid card. Make sure you read up on the procedurs though, should be a tutorial for the program, let me see if i can attach the file here

It's a good idea to use Driver Cleaner even if you're changing within the same brand. Despite everything nVidia was saying about unified drivers and all, I DID have to clean and reinstall the drivers a few years ago when I moved from my old GF3 to a GFX5700 (both nVidia cards), even though I was using the nVidia reference drivers...

I can't compare much about offline FPS because I almost never run offline...

im jealous steveb, those cards are nice! (and heavy!! i just built up my friends system=evga 680i mobo, core2duo, 2gig ram, evga 8800 gts, in a lian li case, i was supprised by the size and weight of that card!)

mines done, i used the new system for the usa race. heres how it sits now:
asus nforce4 sli mobo
intel p4 2.66 w/1mb cache overclocked to 3.2
1gig corsair xms2pro mem
nvidia g6600 gt (gona get another soon and go sli)
200gb seagate sata drive (running windows swap file on my maxtor 80gb that does not contain any window data or game data, and its almost as fast as the sata, noticed a slight improvement from that)

next round will be:
another 6600gt for sli
2 more 200gb drives for raid 5 array
another gig corsair mem
if i cant find a core2duo cheap, then a pentium d 940 dual core
and i HOPE TO GOD a new steering wheel--i guess the GT
and a new case, im going to go media center style i think.

im kinda itching to build a homemade wireless router with mini-itx components, with networked storage and maybe small server capabilities.

Hello everyone,
I wandered in here and saw what Brad was running for an old machine and fell off my chair laughing. And I hope to god that new machine doesn't make you any faster...hahaha...Just so you know...My brother is doing awesome...still on chemo but rockin and happy that this is all going well this time. That takes a load off all of our minds...Now about that new machine Brad...Nice work...and good choice with the core duo.I am running core duos in my laptops.Now...Brad....don't get frikkin carried away with overclocking ok?...It sux sending a chip back in for return..LOL...Steve B.old buddy...I have a 8800gts 640 meg card also.and yes it affects framerate when online and all cards are affected.Good choice for a card though although the ati x1950 pro is dirt cheap but I have had lockups in gta san andreas and solid locks in rfactor (vpu error)which i never get with my nvidia cards. Also remember that nvidia has killer heat sinks on their cards.Mine has 8 heat pipes and only 4 on the ati 1950.As for money though. The x1950 is 200 bucks cheaper....awesome deal....I downloaded the replay from the u.s.a race and was very impressed with bilbos run.See what happens when you get a bit of help from a master driver like Drago eh?...LOL...Don't erase that setup or i'll come over there and slap you myself...LOL...awesome run though.I have been busy at work and tripping to vancouver at every chance i get.The irony of life though is.I have 5 gaming machines now (3 in the livingroom and 2 in my room)and I haven't barely played anything(except a few races in super clio)After all this is over though I will be back practising again and loving it I'm sure.Until then gentlemen...I will keep watching the replays and keeping you informed once in a while of my situation.Oh and Hamilton kicks ass(lewis)..LOL>..
later racers.

thats awesome about your bro carrera!!! you must feel like a boulder has been lifted off you shoulders! i can only imagine how i would feel if something like that was happening to my younger brother, (i have a VERY good imagination, some would say over-active :) and im just glad you are able to have good news. the core2duo was for my friend john, im just running single core P4. (its a newer model with a full 1mb cashe, and i got it got $25, im happy with it :) for a modern computer, im still on the low end, but my upgrade path is there, my mobo will support dual core 1066mhz fsb chips, so when the cash is there .................................................................................................................(i could do about 3 more lines of dots for symbolism, but i think people get im broke :).......................................................................
