bad accident for Mark Webber

Post by Flow »

Mark Webber's accident in Australia will force him to miss the entire Formula One winter testing season. However, Red Bull Racing says they expect him to be ready for the first race of the 2009 season. "While it looks like he's out of the winter testing programme, we fully expect Mark to make the starting grid in Melbourne next March," read a statement from the team. Webber suffered a broken right leg after being involved in a head on collision with a car while taking part in his charity event in Tasmania. He underwent successful surgery where a steel rod was placed in his leg to aid in the recovery process. The driver of the car escaped without any serious injury. "Mark's in good spirits," event director Geoff Donohue tells the BBC. "The broken leg is the injury, and beyond that, he's in really good shape. He has a little bit of a graze on his left forearm, but he has had full scans and everything else is clear. "He'll be in hospital for at least three days, for sure under a week. I was speaking to him before the operation, and he was already thinking about his rehabilitation."

The 32-year-old was also scheduled to take part in next month's Race of Champions in England, but will no doubt miss that event as well. With new aerodynamic rules and the re-introduction of slick tires set to take effect in 2009, all F1 drivers will be keen to get as much track time as possible prior to the start of the season. Webber's accident will put him behind the eight ball in his preparations.
